Maryland Light Dragoons (MdLD) 2009 season SCHEDULE
mid JANUARY TBD... 2009 Brigade Napoleon Winter Truce (dismounted) at Old Bedford Village. Regency dinner, training lectures.
MAY 1-3 2009 Brigade Napoleon Rosaryville tactical weekend. Opposed vs French 3rd Cuirassiers(a French armored cavalry unit) and 7th Hussars(a French light cavalry unit). We are British 16th Light Dragoons, 6th Dragoons and West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry (ie MdLD rig...). Nice site for riding and outposting practice. Rentals available.
MAY 31 2009 Hispanic RevWar event at Sully Plantation, Chantilly. Small event, but good riding site (150 acres, 30 in pasture). Part of our Va Horse Council Grant to have either harness maker or better yet 2+ horses there. No rentals available.
JUNE 27-28 2009 Brigade Napoleon Grand Tactique in Old Bedford Village, PA. Rentals available. Vs French, village scenario (modest site for riding quality).
JULY 10-11 2009 (maybe for us...) War of 1812 Grand Tactical in eastern Ontario, Canada. Still seeking rental horse source up there. ~400 reenactors but less than a dozen horse, probably. Rentals available. Had a GREAT time at 1812 GT last Sept at Jefferson Patterson Park in S. Md. ....if 1812 GT doesn't work out, a possible 'away' replacement is Austerlitz Village Napoloenic in eastern NY state. 14-16 August, smaller event, but they say they'll have rentals available.
SEPTEMBER 6 2009 War of 1812 Defenders Day at Fort Howard. Larger local event but we'd be the only cav....we'll likely check it out for riding quality with 2-3 members, decide whether we can support it more fully in future years. No rentals.
SEPTEMBER 12-13 2009 War of 1812 Battle of St Leonard's Creek at Jefferson Patterson Park in southern Maryland. Great site for riding, my favorite annual event (good site staff, etc). The big public day is Saturday, some members come to only that. Maybe on rentals, TBD.
OCTOBER 10 2009 1812 Militia Muster at Sully Plantation, Chantilly, Virginia. We have a grant to pay stipends for this event.....if a new member brings rider and horse (and possibly extra horse as 'rental' for another rider-member), gains enough money to pay for interim 1812 uniform (tailored MdLD coatee, and maybe either the blue trowsers or the tarleton helmet). This is a unique opportunity....if you can commit early, and pay a small $20 stipend, I get the seamstress working on your gear now, and you wear your new stuff at the event (other, borrow whatever size we have, and sew after...). If you have any interest in an affordable way to enter MdLD, this is it (this year only, I think....). Rentals if we don't get enough new members taking stipends.
NOVEMBER 7 2009 Sully Colonial. Small 2 horse event. Nice site...ride and talk about horses.
Late DECEMBER 2009 Hunter's Valley Christmas Caroling on Horseback local visibility event. Usually just Mike from MdLD (as 6D/nutcracker-cavalry) but others from MdLD welcome.
This year we have six riding dragoons paid, and three distaff..... 3 riders in No. VA. (Mike, Jim, my daughter age 21 Sarah ('Sam')) 2 riders in Maryland (Laytonsville area) (Bob, Caryll (pronounced 'Carl') 1 distaff in Maryland Balt-Annapolis line (Betty Ann, webmistress, former rider, prototype seamtress) 1 rider and 1 distaff in Delaware (Jim and wife) 1 rider and 1 distaff in North Carolina (Tom and wife) and I am starting recruiting (...hard for mounted...) in my Oakton new digs.....LOVE my new and extensive trails!
If you are interested, members do anything from one to all events per year....most do about half ie 3-4. If we don't get 2 horse, we cancel the event for us. Love to have you....note the cool and unique 'free initial kit' option for 10 Oct, Sully! With your existing gear, you'd have a nifty Napoleonic rig, for (almost) free, and our wonderful little group to ride with occasionally. Your arabian mare might like our activities.
